國際保育組織世界自然基金會（WWF）16日宣佈，，在新幾內亞巴布亞島熱帶雨林中，發現了至少8種新的蘭花品種。庫土布湖（Kutubu）周圍的基科里區（Kikori），是被國際正式承認的生物多樣性熱點，此地區之前從未有人進入探測的部分區域，還找到另外20種可能是新品種的蘭花，目前仍在等待最後的確認。
New Orchids Found in Papua New Guinea Rainforest
At least eight new species of orchid have been discovered in tropical rainforests of Papua New Guinea, the international conservation group WWF announced today. The group is awaiting verification on as many as 20 other potentially new orchids, which were found in previously unexplored parts of the Kikori region surrounding Lake Kutubu, an area internationally recognized as a biodiversity hotspot.
