陟彼岵兮，瞻望父兮。
父曰：「嗟予子，行役夙夜無已，
上慎旃哉！猶來無止！」

陟彼屺兮，瞻望母兮。
母曰：「嗟予季，行役夙夜無寐，
上慎旃哉！猶來無棄！」

陟彼岡兮，瞻望兄兮。
兄曰：「嗟予弟，行役夙夜必偕，
上慎旃哉！猶來無死！」

※「陟」音同「滯」；「岵」因同「戶」；「旃」因同「沾」；「屺」因同「杞」。 

 

爬山

爬上座小禿山，遙望父親。
父說：「唉，兒呀，當兵早晚不得閒，
千萬小心，安全的回來呀。」

爬上座小青山，遙望母親。
母說：「唉，兒呀，當兵睡不好覺，
千萬小心，平安的回來呀。」

爬上座小山崗，遙望兄長。
兄說：「唉，弟呀，當兵在戰場，
千萬小心，不要死在他鄉呀。」

Climbing a Hill
Translated by Fu-Shiang Chia

Ascending a barren hill, looking afar to my father.
Father said: "My son, in the army you will be busy every day.
Be careful and return home safely."

Climbing up a treeless hill, looking afar to my mother.
Mother said: "My son, in the army you will have no time to sleep.
Be careful and return home safely."

Climbing up a rocky hill, looking afar to my brother.
Brother said: "My brother, life in the army is dangerous.
Be careful. Don’t die in a foreign place."
