A Cause for Double Celebration

A Cause for Double Celebration
by Oliver Maurice, International National Trusts Organisation

It is wonderful to be able to share in the celebrations of TEIA's 10th anniversary, albeit from a distance!

I first knew about TEIA through meeting 3 of their staff, including Hsiu-ju, in England when they were on a fact finding tour, learning from other conservation bodies including the National Trust. It was not long after that they decided to join the International National Trusts Organisation and they invited me to visit Taiwan to help with some specific issues and to spread the word about the National Trust movement.

My visit took place in April last year and during the 12 days I was there I became enormously impressed by the scale and variety of their work, the contacts they had made and the influence that they appeared to have.

I was specifically involved in the campaign to protect the Dachen Wetlands from the totally unsustainable proposal to site a petrochemical factory on the land and thus, most likely, to destroy the livelihoods of the oyster fishermen, the bio diversity of the wetlands themselves and
to render the Pink Dolphin extinct.

So, on 19 May there is cause for a double celebration. Firstly the 10th anniversary and secondly the achievements of TEIA, with others, to persuade the President to intervene and put an end to this proposal.

What TEIA has achieved in 10 years is remarkable; may you continue the good work and ensure that the non-governmental organisations in Taiwan grow in strength and influence. I wish you all the very best for the future.
