印尼及越南8月傳出兩國青少年淪為H5N1禽流感病毒肆虐的受害對象。印尼衛生局16日公開表示，國內最新一起人類感染禽流感死亡病例發生在一名17歲少女身上。一樣位於南亞的越南最新死亡病例，是一名青年學子於8月初染病死亡。
單就印尼國內統計，自爆發禽流感疫情以來已出現104起人類感染的確定病例，其中83人已不幸喪生。印尼當局在聯合國的支援下，正如火如荼地採取行動牽制峇里島爆發的疫情，內容包括大量撲殺疫區內問題鳥類，以及舉辦教育宣導活動，提升公眾對禽流感的意識。
另一方面，越南衛生局亦公布自2003年底爆發禽流感以來，越南國內已通報100多起人類感染確定病例，46人因病死亡。
專家學者們擔心假若禽流感病毒變種，更加上容易在人群之中傳播傳染，且演變成全球性的流行病，到時全球死亡病例不但會攀升，甚至可能超出百萬人這樣駭人的數字。
世界衛生組織（WHO）發言人哈特（Gregory Hartl）稍早前表示，全球人類感染禽流感的案例已趨於緩和，不過目前仍有少數發展中國家未能有效遏止病毒在雞隻與禽鳥中蔓延的情形。
Teenagers in both Indonesia and Vietnam fell victim to H5N1 avian influenza this month. A 17 year old girl is the Indonesia's latest human bird flu death, the Ministry of Health announced today. The most recent Vietnamese fatality was a teenage student who died during the first week of August.
Of the 104 human cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 83 have been fatal. Supported by the United Nations, authorities are taking action to contain the outbreak on Bali, including the mass culling of birds in the area and educational activities to improve public awareness about bird flu.
Since the start of the most recent bird flu outbreak in late 2003, 46 people have died in Vietnam out of 100 confirmed human infections, the Health Ministry said.
Experts fear the global death toll could soar if the virus were to mutate and become easily transmissible between humans, leading to a global pandemic with the potential to kill millions.
Earlier this month, World Health Organization spokesman Gregory Hartl said global bird flu cases appeared to have stabilized among humans but that several developing nations had not been able to stop the spread of the disease among poultry and domesticated birds.
