印度洋強震所引發的海嘯猛撲印尼爪哇島南部海灘，造成西爪哇省至少105人喪生，上千名民眾也在海嘯來襲後撤離到較高的山坡地。當地時間17日下午3:19發生的強震是引發此次海嘯的原因，震央位於雅加達南方355公里處。
Java Tsunami Sweeps More Than 100 People to Their Deaths
At least 105 people are reported dead in West Java province after a tsunami triggered by a severe earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean inundated the southern coast of the island of Java. The flooding wave sent thousands of people fleeing to higher ground. The tsunami was touched off by a severe earthquake that occurred at 3:19 pm local time today. The epicenter of the quake was about 355 kilometers (220 miles) south of Jakarta.
