根據一份在2005年所進行的大規模實地調查指出，盜獵行為已導致馬來西亞蘇門答臘犀牛的數量減少到只剩下一小群，婆羅洲沙巴州境內也只剩少數幾隻而已。這個由9個政府單位、非政府組織和研究機構的研究人員所組成的調查小組，只能在沙巴州內找到13隻犀牛。
Sumatran Rhinos on Borneo Down to a Few Dozen Animals
Poaching has reduced Malaysia's population of Sumatran rhinos to just a small group plus a few individuals clinging to survival in the state of Sabah on the island of Borneo, according to an extensive field study conducted in 2005. Teams from nine government agencies, nongovernmental organizations and academic institutions were able to find just 13 animals in the state of Sabah.
