The rate of infant deaths near five nuclear power plants dropped substantially after the nuclear reactors were closed, according to a new study published in the spring edition of the Journal of Environmental Epidemiology and Toxicology. The study suggests that the health of people who live within 50 miles of a nuclear power plant may be affected by radioactive releases from the plant. It was presented at a news conference yesterday by Rep. Michael Forbes (D-N.Y.), supermodel-cum-anti-nuke-activist Christie Brinkley, and the Radiation and Public Health Project, which is calling on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to do more to protect citizens from nuclear reactors. In other nuke news, a second worker has died in Japan as a result of the nation's worst nuclear accident, which happened last September.
