在最新發表的科學研究中指出，2004年12月所發生的南亞海嘯，對蘇門達臘西海岸的珊瑚礁影響不若對陸地造成的破壞。由珊瑚礁檢測機構（Reef Check）派遣一支研究團隊，至近地震及海嘯震央的印尼群島進行監測，他們發現珊瑚礁有被翻轉及破損的情形，但勘查過的部份僅有少於半數的破壞是由於海嘯所造成。
Tsunami Less Destructive than Overfishing to Sumatran Reefs
Coral reefs fringing the coast of western Sumatra suffered minor physical damage from the December 2004 tsunami compared with the destruction on land, newly published research shows. A scientific team sent by Reef Check to the Indonesian island nearest the epicenter of the earthquake and tsunami found overturned and broken corals, but no tsunami damage at more than half of the reefs surveyed.
