美國漁業及野生物局再次拒絕將加州斑點梟歸列《瀕絕物種法》保育範圍內之申請。為回應對此生物三年內兩次申請的結果，該單位澄清，根據其位於加州內華達山脈森林的研究調查發現，大多梟類族群數量穩定，甚至有成長跡象。然而保育人士卻無法苟同以該調查作為前提的拒絕理由。
California Spotted Owl Endangered Listing Petition Fails
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has denied a petition to list the California spotted owl under the Endangered Species Act. In responding to a second petition to list the species in three years, the agency says its survey of California’s Sierra Nevada forests found most owl populations stable or increasing. Conservationists disagree with the premise on which the survey is based.
