保育人士於24日指出，牙買加科克皮特地區(Cockpit Country)鋁氧石(Bauxite)的鑽採活動對於這一帶的熱帶潮濕石灰岩森林地區的動植物將造成威脅。鋁氧石為鋁的原料。牙買加中部曾經一度為溼石灰岩森林所覆蓋，其中科克皮特地區佔地173平方英里，面積最大且最為完整。
Bauxite Mine Fight Looms in Jamaica's Cockpit Country
Drilling for bauxite samples in Jamaica's Cockpit Country is threatening the plants and animals that live in the region's moist tropical limestone forest, said conservationists today. Bauxite is the raw material for aluminum. Central Jamaica was once blanketed with wet limestone forests, and the 173 square miles of Cockpit Country represent the largest and most intact portion left.
